February 2015 District Report

Wednesday, February 25, 2015 - 00:00

Dear Friends,

Thank you for reading my first E-Newsletter as your Assemblymember.  I'm honored to serve you and be your voice in the State Assembly.  My hope is that these newsletters help keep you informed about what is going on in Sacramento and here at home.

As a classroom teacher, it is an honor to have been selected by the Speaker to serve as Chair of the Assembly's Standing Committee on Education and the Select Committees on Ports and Aerospace.  Additionally, I look forward to the work I will do as a member of the Assembly's Budget, Judiciary, Transportation, and Public Employees Retirement & Social Security Committees.

My office and I have some great events planned, and as always, your feedback and ideas are welcome.  Please feel free to contact me through my website or by calling my District Office at (562) 495-2915 if I may be of any service to you.

I was honored to be surrounded by hundreds of friends, family, community members and elected officials at my Community Swearing-In Ceremony aboard the USS Iowa last month.
The ceremony featured an introduction by L.A. City Councilmember Joe Buscaino and a tribute from Congressman Alan Lowenthal, who I worked for as a Capitol Fellow when the Congressman was first elected to the California State Legislature in 1998. There is more in this Assembly Access video.

Assemblymember Patrick O'Donnell Receives Committee Assignments

I'm pleased to announce that during the 2015-16 Legislative session, I will be chairing the following committees: Education, Select Committee on Ports, and Select Committee on Aerospace. I also will be serving on the Transportation, Judiciary, Budget, Budget Subcommittee on Education, and Public Employee Retirement System committees.

Introduction of Assembly Bill (AB) 204

I'm excited to have introduced my first bill on January 29. Assembly Bill 204 allows local governments, like Long Beach and Signal Hill, to continue to control the dissolution and sale of long time properties obtained under the former redevelopment law.  This bill helps local governments avoid costly delays in the conduct of property sales by ensuring local oversight control and is sponsored by the City of Long Beach.

First Assembly Education Committee Hearing

Last week, I chaired the first hearing of the year of the Assembly Education Committee. The focus of the hearing was school construction and modernization. As a teacher for over 20 years, I'm looking forward to working with my colleagues and education leaders to create 21st Century schools, modern classrooms, and enhanced athletic fields.
