March 2015 District Report

Wednesday, April 1, 2015 - 00:00

Dear Friend:

Thanks for reading my March Newsletter!

It's been a busy month both in the District and the State Capitol!  In the Capitol, my staff and I worked to introduce our legislative bill package. I'm excited to be the author of some exciting bills that are good for our district and good for Californians.

In the District, my staff and I participated in Snow Day 2015, the Inaugural Saint Patrick's Day parade and hosted my first 70th District Women of Distinction Event.

Know of a small business or non-profit in the district that you want to share with your neighbors? Let my district office know! Each month, we will have a Small Business and Non-Profit of the Month! Maybe you'll see your suggestion in a future newsletter!

As always, my offices are here to assist you with state agencies or departments.  For more information on services offered, visit my website or call (562) 495-2915.

Thousands of residents from across the 70th District joined us for SNOW DAY – a free event for the whole family – at Whaley Park on February 28th.  Kids and their parents had a great time sled racing and building snowmen in the snow play areas.  My office and I were pleased to speak with constituents, provide a legislative update, and share my priorities in Sacramento. Thank you to our many community partners who hosted fun booths, including face painting, arts and crafts, bounce houses, and much more!

As the Chair of the Select Committee on Aerospace, I am thrilled to welcome Virgin Galactic to their new LauncherOne manufacturing site in Long Beach. With their move to the 70th District, they are bringing new jobs and a new exciting industry – space travel and exploration.

Earlier this month, I had the chance to attend a briefing and tour the SpaceX Headquarters in Hawthorne as well as the Boeing Satellite facility in El Segundo. The future of aerospace is here in California!

Test Driving Smarter Balance
I was pleased to sponsor a Smarter Balance Assessment test-taking event on the 17th. This event gave me, other elected officials, and staffers, the opportunity to test-drive the State’s new summative and formative assessment tests. I was also able to sit down with the California Education Department technologists and assessment staff to ask questions about the implementation of the new assessment program.

Joint Hearing on Adult Education
As chair of the Assembly Education Committee, I convened a March 11th Joint Informational Hearing on adult education programs.  Along with the Assembly Higher Education and Senate Education Committees, we heard testimonies from the Department of Finance, the Legislative Analyst's Office, the Superintendent of Public Instruction’s office, and California Community Colleges Chancellor’s office, and local representatives. The Governor's budget proposal provides $500 million for an adult education block grant, which as a former adult education teacher, I know the importance of these programs.  While expressing support for the funds, I questioned whether decisions regarding the allocation of Proposition 98 dollars should be made by non-K-12 and Community College entities.
