O’Donnell Statement on Proposal to Start the Next School Year Early
Chair of Assembly Education Committee Says Summer School Better than an Early Start to Next Year
(Sacramento) - Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell (D - Long Beach) issued the following statement in response to the Governor’s remarks that the state is considering starting the next school year early.
“It would be better for our students to take summer classes than to simply start the school year earlier,” said Assemblymember O’Donnell, Chair of the Assembly Education Committee. “Some students need summer school to make up for lost credits and to help boost their G.P.A. to get into college.”
Today, the Governor stated that state officials are considering moving the school year up to late July or early August. This is in response to concerns over learning loss.
“While learning loss is an important issue, summer school will play an even larger role in helping students get up to speed on their education,” said Assemblymember O’Donnell.
Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell represents the 70th Assembly District, which includes Long Beach, Signal Hill, San Pedro and Catalina Island.
