Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell Statement on Anthem Blue Cross Termination of Long Beach Medical Center

Wednesday, August 23, 2017

“Anthem Blue Cross should negotiate with Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, not patient lives.”

(SACRAMENTO) –  Effective August 15, Anthem Blue Cross discontinued hospital services at the Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, removing it as an in-network provider.  Enrollees were given no prior notice and were informed in a letter received after August 15 that directed them to seek alternate contracted facilities for care.  This took place in the midst of contract negotiations.

Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell (D-Long Beach) issued the following statement:

“I am outraged to learn that thousands of families will no longer be served by Long Beach Memorial Medical Center if Anthem Blue Cross is their healthcare provider.  I call on Anthem Blue Cross to immediately reinstate the Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and complete its mission of providing the responsible and adequate health care that enrollees have come to expect.  Anthem Blue Cross should negotiate with Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, not patient lives.”

Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell represents the 70th Assembly District which includes Long Beach, Signal Hill, San Pedro and Catalina Island.
